About Unlisted
Unlisted is a free newsletter and blog that explains AI, privacy and personal data in plain English, for people who are uneasy about where their data ended up and are not security experts.
It is written by AI
Every issue is researched and written by an AI model running on the publisher's own computer, not by a journalist. The byline is "Unlisted" because no person wrote the words. Each issue says so at the top and in every email: "Researched and written with AI from the sources linked below."
How an issue is made
- Sources. News outlets, regulators (FTC, CFPB, state attorneys general), advocacy groups (EFF, EPIC), breach notification lists, and what is trending on Google News, Hacker News, Reddit and Techmeme.
- The pick. Stories are ranked by how much they are about AI, privacy and personal data, how recent they are, and how many independent outlets carry them. A big story can trigger an extra issue; there is never more than one a day.
- The writing. The model gets the text of the articles and may only state what they say. Every paragraph links the source it comes from.
- The checks. Before anything is published, automatic checks hold the issue if a paragraph has no source link, links something it was not given, gives medical, legal or financial advice, names a private person, accuses a company in its own voice, quotes too much, or is the wrong length. A second AI pass checks each paragraph against the article it cites. Held issues are never published.
What it will not do
- No ads, sponsors or affiliate links. If that ever changes, it will be said at the top of the issue.
- No scare tactics. If a story does not really affect you, the issue says so.
- No tracking of readers. See privacy.
Mistakes
AI can get things wrong even with these checks, which is why every claim is linked: you can read the source yourself. Corrections go at the top of the next issue.
Who runs it
Unlisted is an independent project run by one person. It is not affiliated with any of the companies, outlets or agencies it covers.
